In this interview with Susanna Starr, self-published author, she shares her views on print-on-demand (POD) publishing houses and on the mechanics of self-publishing.

Fifty and Beyond: New Beginnings in Health and Well-Being A non-authoritarian approach to fitness and well-being, aimed especially at people approaching and beyond age fifty. An inspiration during a time of mid-life for those who are ready for new beginnings. Clear and insightful suggestions for developing our potential through expanding the mind, caring for the body and celebrating the spirit. 148 pages, trade paperback, Health/Inspiration & Personal Growth, Price: $14.95 US ($23.95 CAN), ISBN 0-9720084-4-6, LCCN 2002105566 Suite 101: Tell me about your book—why Fifty and Beyond? Susanna Starr: I don’t think anyone should write a book unless they feel strongly that they have something to say that they consider of real value. Whether it’s a work of fiction, of poetry, a handbook or instruction manual, there needs to be an imperative on the part of the author to get the message out. I knew that I needed to write this particular book because what I had to say was presented not as a “how to” book, but as an inspiration for those over fifty (or approaching it) to look at the way they view life where they are now, accept that place and celebrate it. Suite 101: Why did you decide to self-publish? Susanna Starr: My partner and I decided it would be both easier and quicker for a new author to get a book out with self-publishing. Suite 101: Who published or printed your book? Susanna Starr: We formed our own publishing company which worked very well. Suite 101: Did you work with a print-on-demand published? Susanna Starr: No, we went with a company called Lightning Source and have continued to work with them. Suite 101: Why that particular company? Susanna Starr: One reason was that we had more control than with a POD publishing house. We get more of the proceeds from the book and, to me, some of the POD houses appear to be glorified vanity presses. Also since Lightning Source is a subsidiary of one of the largest book distributors, Ingram, the book was listed with Amazon, Barnes and Noble online and others, and with their distribution network in the U.K. Suite 101: How are sales? Susanna Starr: As with all self publishing, sales depend on how much effort the author puts into the process. Much depends on self generated publicity and promotion including book signings and speaking engagements. Suite 101: What are the advantages? Susanna Starr: As a result of the book I’ve become recognized as an expert in the field with interviews, talks, workshops, reviews, etc. as well as becoming an on-line editor for a page in my field of older adults. Suite 101: What advice would you give to someone considering self publishing? Susanna Starr: It’s a lot of work, but a great and quicker way to get your writing out there and to get recognized in your field. And, it’s very satisfying. It also eliminates the frustration factor of trying to get an agent and subsequently a publisher. Obviously, one does not have to deal with rejections and the kind of time lags accompanying that.
