Ned Mansour, former General Counsel and President of Mattel, Inc talks about his experiences in self-publishing, his new novel, and his co-written children's book.
Ned is no stranger to self-publishing. His titles include Divided Roads, White Canvas, Florian's Special Gift and A Cedar Valley Christmas. He has self-published his adult novels though internet print on demand services, but his children’s books are something special. He says that despite all the hard work, he’d do it all again. Why Did you Decide to Self-Publish Florian's Special Gift? ‘I had written two other books before Florian's Special Gift, but both were directed to an adult audience. The concept of the Florian book came my way after meeting Amanda Goodrich, who had recently lost her husband to cancer. The book was aimed at readers of all ages, but primarily for kids, to help them understand the passing of life. We patterned the story to weave in some of Amanda's experiences with her husband. Then Linda Gunn joined the team to develop magical artwork which brought the story to life.’ What Did You Hope to Gain by Self-Publishing?‘Certainly not fame or fortune because I knew that most likely this would be a small publishing run with little publicity. Part of it was the challenge of such a project. Another part was working with Amanda and Linda. I am sure ego was involved, but the most important component was sharing the story, particularly with those who had recently lost a loved one. ‘The book exceeded my expectations, particularly donating it to various hospice organizations, but the sad part was the limited publicity and distribution. We had hoped that it would get picked up by a mainstream publisher to gain a wider audience, but we tried everything to get attention from book agents and publishers, but unfortunately without success.’ What was Your Favourite Part of the Process?‘Without a doubt seeing the finished product. To touch it and read it. The book signings and speaking about the story with the media were enjoyable events. The most gratifying feeling of accomplishment was to hear that it helped a person through a difficult time, specially a child who lost a member of the family, including a pet.’ What Advice Would You Give to Other Aspiring Self-Publishers?‘If you have an idea for a book and you have the passion, drive and determination to complete the project, then go for it. You will never regret self-publishing, but you should know in advance that it can be a punishing process. Nevertheless, it is worth the effort to see your story or concept in print.’ Are There Any New Projects on the Horizon?‘I have now completed five books, including co-writing Florian's Special Gift. Each became totally consuming because I cannot do anything half way. After writing my most current book, Nice Average Guy, I said this was the last one, but I have said this before. You never know what will inspire you.’
